Yes - the tiebreak is quite a sensitive subject and given your exit strategy I can see why you choose to avoid the first set tiebreak if you backed the favorite. Two good indicators as to what the outcome of the tiebreak will be are current form and tiebreak record. Tiebreak record is very important as there are players that are known to play their best in a tiebreak and you will see that the market will stop supporting them even if they are favorite and they go into a first set tiebreak for example. To give some names - Murray, Djokovic, Federer, Tsonga, Roddick, Berdych and a few more.
There are some pitfalls though, as form matters too, for example when Canas was in good form, he would win a lot of tiebreaks but as his level started to drop, he would lose 60-70 percent of the tiebreaks played. Again - it is your job as a punter to check these stats.

Hi, I could give some thoughts here as I have extensive tennis knowledge.
First of all I am not so sure about your strategy here, you are backing mostly short priced favorites and scratch the trade when they get into trouble. For me that means that the only way to win a bet is if the short priced favorite is a train to 1.01. I haven't checked the statistics but for me, from a trader's point of view - it's not very often the case.Take Almagro's last two matches before yesterday.
You could have backed him @ 1.4 and 1.5 pre match, and he won them. But he traded at odds of over 7 in each of them. That's where you're missing out on a lot of value. I wouldn't fancy my chances of making profits backing a favorite and only winning the bet IF he is a train to 1.01. Markets usually know when a fav wins like that, and you get no value in the odds - Wozniacki for example. She wins a lot of straight sets matches but the odds on her are a joke.Also, the quality of the picks is debatable, IF you want 1.01 trains, you have to be very very careful with the selection, and this is where I think you come up short.
Also you need much better loss management, I saw you lost 15% of your bank in a single day, you cannot afford losses like that.Hope you take these thoughts into consideration when you decide to make changes to your strategy.

Sometimes for example yesterday the Verdasco match, I will try to stay in the match, because the price is allowing it. this depends on the mass price behaviour.
Regarding the quality of picks I will not argue with you, because you are 100% right. Here is avery big point to optimize the strategy.
My point is that I don't know if the fav will win at all, in gerneral nobody knows it. I will go with the fav as long it is an easy match, like you said a 1.01 train. If I see that it is going the hard way, I try to find the exit. I am still convinced, that the scratch trades are actually my winners at the end of the story.
Interesting is that until today nobody gave me an answer regarding the numbers, for example I had more than 300 initial 600 bets, around 230000$ turnaround and I am down 2300$ = 1% and around 1700$ paid commission. not to mention the retirements. How many trades or turnaround do I need that those numbers will be meaningful/convincing?To tell you the truth, if I will not lose any money here I am very much satisfied.

There is none as horselover has said himself. Horselover what would the profit be if you layed the odds on as your opening trade, have you gone back over the results?. Your losses would be smaller and more frequent but i'd imagine its a better way to go about it.

I can't remember that I have talked at some stage about an edge.if I understand you right, you mean that I should reverse my strategy and instead of backing, I should lay every selection.
I personally need for every market position an exit strategy. this is one reason I couldn't do it. I even can't test it, because of this. and as I am already an old guy, I know that if a system has a downdraw people tend to tell other people or themselve, that if I lose this way, I need only to reverse it and go against it.
believe me or not, thats what I did when I was the first time (40 Years ago) in a casino. I can tell you thats not the way to handle a strategy. even if it is a bad one.
the panic reactions after a loss is a very common reaction in the stock and betting exchange.for now I will stick to my strategy. I think that the only optimization could be a better knowledge of my selections.

I need to keep my discipline and patience, and everything will be fine. there will be much better days, imho.

another example that sometimes I stick to the match even in a 3rd set is the Kirilenko v Martinez Sanchez, but it is not the momentum, it is the price.again, this I call discretionary trading.

I am sure You earned Your beer and a quiet evening. I am already retired. regarding the retirements,let me explain my point of view. lets take the retirement from yesterday, it happened when my selection was up 1st set and 1:0. I couldnt lose in this match anyway. Dementieva was 1.28, I will need 2-3 retirements for each retirement against me.
I personally dont think that I will get so many retirements to equalize the retirements against me. I have to eat it as it comes You are 100% right that I need to use the stats that You mentioned. but as I said , I like stats, but I cant work with excel to program it the way I would need it. those stats would be 100% very helpful in any way.
what I am doing now, is experience only. over the years I followed the tennis prices and saw reccurring price movements. especially the panic movements (over and under reactions).the scratch trade is for me the most important trade, even if I scratch sometimes to early, but who knowswhat is to early? this we know only after the match. I am still convinced that a scratch to early is not hurting me.
I also use Gruss.

I speak from some experience of a similar system as for 9 months now, I have manually noted the lowest price that horses traded at - without winning - in all U.K. and Ireland markets.
I have have stats now for over 5,000 races and the curved back to prove it!I wanted a system where my own thoughts/views/knowledge did not sway me and horse-racing fitted the bill as i know very little about it and have purposefully maintained that.Similar to you when you said that other posters know more about tennis than you.
I now lay the field at certaiin courses and at certain types of races but was puzzled after several months, why I was not winning more often, even after discovering other factors along the way such as Irish races often have liitle liquidity, Sunday races can also be poor etc etc - perhaps similar to in your case, unusual number of retirements.
So I analysed my spread-sheets, and found I was laying too high because I wanted 'safety'.So if the most profitable lay would be 1.30, I would then lay at 1.50 as I felt covered by the 20 pts gap. If it was 1.45, then I would lay at 1.65.
As a person, I feel more comfortable if I can win smaller amounts regularly than one large win followed by several small losses. We all have our quirks and that by nature is me.
But, I've had to change my tactics and now lay a lot lower - and hence much nearer the most profitable figure - and my profit levels have improved.There were 2 similar races yesterday, where my most profitable lay was 1.17.Two months ago I would have laid 20 points higher at 1.37.Result 1st race - lowest traded without winning was 1.22. Result 2nd race - lowest traded without winning was 1.13.
Using £ 100 fixed level liability (although I'm not that high yet!)New method at 1.17 = 388 ((-100) + (588-100=488)).Old 'comfort' method at 1.37 = + 340 (270-100 x 2 races).
£48 is not a lot of difference but then multiplied by the number of races that are held each week in UK/Ireland, makes a considerable difference in the long term.

Another well-meant posting out of the betair forum

first of all thanks for taking the time to try to get deeper in my strategy and trying to help.with laying the short priced selections, I have a problem. I mentioned this before in an earlier posting. I dont see the exit strategy for the short price lays.your idea with backing only the high priced selections is imho spot on. I thought about it all the time. I thought to back only 1.49 to 1.95 because the winning bets will bring more money in and the losers will cost me less.I need to think about this in more depth and try it in real, because no backtesting possible.I will need to take the time and go through the 1.49 = backed selections and see how the outcome would have been. just for info, till today I had 161 backed selections. with many bad beats and 3 retirements and commission paid. thanks again for pointing this out, it always helps when people from outside like spectators are watching. they see more than the one inwolved.

horseloverYou seem like a decent bloke and respond well to both criticisms and congratulations in the same even-handed manner, but you need to take a serious look at what you're doing I think. Your thread has only been going a month but it's been a slow and steady decline. In that short space of time you are already 3,000 down with a third of your bank lost - and the trend is only going one way. Don't be fooled by the odd day or two of good wins as these are inevitably being wiped out by large losses. I trust you have a spreadsheet for you daily/weekly P&L (and if you don't I suggest you start one immediately). It must be showing you a sea a red and alarm bells should be ringing.Tennis is not my area so I have no grounds/knowledge to criticise your selections, but on the face of it they appear well-considered. Your staking method however appears to be all over the place with little or no fall-back plan when a match goes against you. It's this that is wiping-out any hard-earned gains you have made. I wish you all the best, I really do. And it's nice to see people continue with their threads through thick and thin - but it's surely time for a review?

I dont see a steady slow and steady decline. I think that people have a big problem with drawdowns.but there is no system or strategy without a drawdown, imho. I have to repeat myself, I tested it before with a smaller bank roll and had the same drawdowns.this is the reason I said to myself, I will do it with a bigger bank roll and this thread is helping me to keep the discipline and patience that is needed in case of a drawdown like now. sure, I could optimize the strategy with every loss. but I will not. this is the mistake most of the people are doing,imho. they optimize after each loss and lose their head. I will stick to it with this bank roll. I am also very confident that I will recover the loss. I had 3 retirements, and some bad beats and scratch trades. the 3 retirements is already half of the loss. now regarding the spreadsheet. I am already an old man and not so fit like the youngesters here. I dont know what you understand under the spreadsheet, and the alarm bells. maybe you can help meto understand a spreadsheet to make my life easier I put the daily P&L in an excel file with the results. thats all.my strategy has a fix entry and an exit with max loss number. the entry = to chose the fav, could be much better if I would put more work in searching for the fav selections. like I said before, Rome from the tennis forum could much better than me with the fav selection to my strategy.thank you again for trying to point me in the right direction.
